Beep.  Beep.  Beep.
"Vitals are holding."
Beep.  Beep.  Beep.
"Body temperature decreasing; thirty minutes left."
Beep.  Beep. Beeeeeeep.
"He's flat-lining."
"No, not yet."
"We don't want to loose another one."
"Fine.  Pull it out."
Two men in white lab suits stride towards the large cylinder of water and unlock the top of it, pulling an unconscious boy from the frigid water and setting him on a metal table.  They begin unplugging the wires from his arms and chest before feeding a tube down his throat to drain the water from his lungs.  After a few moments, the heart monitor begins to beep regularly and the boy coughs and starts trembling.  The woman behind the computer screens take a look at the stopwatch, an eyebrow rising.  "Twenty-one minutes and forty five seconds."  She frowns.  "Case #217 did much better than this one.  That won't do.  Alright, take it back to the holding cells; we'll resume phase two with 215 and 216 tomorrow."
The others nod and drag the boy from the room, dripping water across the polished linoleum.
The scientist's assistant glances over at her, checking off a space on a chart he was holding.  "This is astounding, Liza; it's like nothing I've ever seen.  It's not scientifically possible."
A small smile pulls at the edge of the woman's lips.  "Such a feat has never been achieved before now; it's an honor to be part of it."  She takes the chart from the man and studies it.  "It's fascinating, though; the results of all four experiments differ drastically, from electrical conductivity to heat resistance.  None of the others ever responded so dramatically to the neurological tweaks as these four.    I think we're nearing a phenomenal breakthrough.  I still can't figure this one out, though.  He's definitely not a Runner."
"Perhaps a Shield?"
"No.  We may be looking at a new class."
She flips through the papers until she reaches the boy's file.  There are diagrams and charts with ratios printed across them, tables and experiment numbers.  No age, no birth date, nothing.  Only a small photograph paper-clipped to the corner.  His skin is fair, his face soft-featured and delicate, and his hair falls across his forehead in loose, ashen brown waves.  It is his eyes that are curious to look at, though.  They changed from lavender to ice, depending on the way the woman tilts the folder, then to seaglass, to hazel, to brown.  It's perplexing; Liza had been studying the intriguing anomaly for fifteen years, and yet she still was no closer to finding an answer to her question than she was the day he was created, the last of the four experiments.  None of the others have it.  Then again, all of the others were Labeled.  "All of them except you," she murmurs, studying the photo.  "What's your secret, 218?  I'll figure it out, you can count on that."
Haha, I don't know. Just a possible story idea; it's like a mixture of "Plague Dogs" and "Race to Witch Mountain". So you know how it's said that humans only use a fraction of our brains? Well, scientists figured out how to unlock certain parts of the brain, experimenting on animals, at first, but slowly graduating up to real people. Their most recent test was with four siblings, Cases #215, 216, 217 and 218, called Operation Starchild. A series of neurological "tweaks" were done to each of their brains from the moment they were each born, but each tweak was in a different section of each or their brains, and each child is "Labeled" a different way. They all acquire superhuman speed, hearing, sight, but each has certain things that set them apart. Alright, meet the kids (they came up with the names themselves): Aphrodite, otherwise known as Di (pronounced DYE), age 17. She's a Seeker, a term that classifies her with gifted offensive/tracking powers, the ability to resist enormous heat, and lightning reflexes. Pollux, aka Pol; 16. He's a Runner; gifted with unheard of speed, the ability to blend with his surrounding, and able to run for long distances without tiring. Hush, 15. She's a Shield; she can manipulate the air to do as she wishes, she can hold her breath underwater for hours, she can make forcefields. Vesper, 15. He's unidentified. But he begins to display telekinetic powers, the ability to "translate", or read minds, he can learn languages at a breakneck pace, and he can manipulate electricity. So... yeah. C:
