“So what…what are you saying, Holly?”
“I—I can’t go through with this trip to Ireland.”
“What?” His voice was no more than a strangled whisper as his heart dropped into the pits of his stomach. “So you’re leaving me behind? Just like that? But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Everyone does, sooner or later.” He shook his head before looking up at her, fighting to speak past the lump in his throat. “But Holly, you promised! You promised-”
“I didn’t promise!” she cried out with distress. “When has anything in our relationship ever been set in stone?”
“But why?”
“I just can’t, Simon! Not with you being—the way that you are, not in your condition. You could die! I’m not qualified for this, and I refuse to be the cause of your death! Please, it’s for the better-”
“No!” screamed Simon suddenly. The word grazed his teeth and shattered upon impact. “No, you can’t—you can’t just—just give me hope like that and crush it! This was my last chance! My last chance to do what my grandmother wanted of me, but now-” he ran his hands through his wispy, hair which was no longer teased and tousled into a coif, “-now it’s come to nothing!”
“Don’t talk like that! You can find another way-”
“No I can’t! You might, but I can’t! You’ve got a whole life ahead of you to live—you can jump onto the next ferry and go wherever you wanted, and you can grow up to be whoever you wish. But I’m just gonna die here!” A fit of coughing seized him and he fell back onto the pillows. “Just fucking leave, then!” he choked. “Just get out!”
