I drew away from his hold with a laugh, and shortly afterwards got to my feet and opened the window for fresh air. Benjamin got up as well and stood beside me, and together we watched the world fade to evening.
“I have a question,” I found myself saying. “About the other day. When we fought.”
“What is it?”
“Are you sad?” I said at last, and he seemed confused.
“Why do you think I’m sad?” asked Benjamin.
“It’s—the way you talk and the way you look at people sometimes. You seem unhappy.”
He frowned. “I don’t know. It’s hard to explain.”
“Well, you should try.”
He shook his head. “I don’t want to.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to talk about things like that. I don’t want to talk about it because it just complicates things. I just want you to be happy—I don’t want to ruin that.”
“But what about your happiness?” I asked him. “What about you?”
“Me?” He paused, then shrugged. “I don’t count.”
